In 1941 folic acid was extracted from the  green leaves of spinach and parsley, which is why it acquired its name (from Latin “folium” – leave). For humans the main sources of folic acid are fruits, beans and green vegetables, cereals, meal, liver, meat, salmon, and tuna fish. About 90% of folic acid in products break down during cooking. Additional intake of Bifidobacterium assists in folic acid synthesis in the large intestine.

Minimal daily need of folic acid is quite high, that is why when not being taken regularly its deficiency is developed in a short period of time (1-4 weeks) , , as it is a water-soluble vitamin and is not deposited in the body.
It is essential for the production of new cells of skin, hair, white blood cells – leucocytes, and red blood cells – erythrocytes.
Folic acid also participates in the elimination of fat deposited in the liver, and transformation of one amino acid into another for protein synthesis in the body, as amino acids are the building blocks of protein.
Recently there has appeared convincing data that deficiency of folic acid, disruptive metabolism of the amino acid containing sulfur, leads to depositing of homocysthein in blood, which is amino acid that produces destructive effects on the blood vessel walls, which in turn assists in the development of atherosclerosis and associated diseases, such as myocardial infarction and cerebral ischemic stroke.
Sufficient amino acid is essential during pregnancy, beginning at the earliest part,. This vitamin participates in the formation of the nervous system of the fetus. It is essential for cell division, growth and development of all the organs and tissues, hematosis processes – formation of erythrocytes, leucocytes, and thrombocytes. Deficiency of folic acid in the body of a pregnant woman increases the risk of pregnancy complications, including spontaneous miscarriage, birth of premature newborn, congenital malformation, physical and mental development disorders of the newborn. It is useful during breast feeding, and relief ffrom post-partum symptoms.
In high doses folic acid possesses estrogen-like effects and can slow down the onset of menopause b and relief from its symptoms, and in young girls it can correct the delay of sexual development.
Folic acid increases clinical effects for treatment of psoriasis, pruritus, hives and other kind of dermatitis. When combined with vitamin B12 it stimulates the process of erythrogenesis, assists in skin pigmentation smoothing caused by vitiligo, and also helpswith acne.
