The conception of ecological safety of the Earth envisages ways of gradual reducing, and further on, eliminating negative consequences of influence of polluted environment on the population’s health. It is a true statement that it’s easier to prevent a disease than to treat it.
One of the priority trends in ensuring ecological safety of the city, along with others, not less important, is the problem of processing industrial and consumption wastes. This problem concerns all types of wastes: industrial, domestic and medical wastes.
But in the past few years, solid domestic wastes have become the most dangerous, in our opinion. Every person can see it with the naked eye, especially if he’s a specialist. The previous system of storing and collecting solid domestic wastes has come out of order.
We live among domestic wastes, step on them in the entrance of our own building, in the yard, in the street, in the places of public recreation, they fly by us, being carried with the wind, they suffocate us being burnt near our dwelling. That’s how we try to do away with them.
The main danger while violating sanitary rules of handling solid domestic waste is in the current and potential ecological and epidemic jeopardy.
1. Dumps of wastes on container ground, tardy collection of these wastes leads to festering processes, contamination of the soil with microorganisms, including pathogenic ones, helminths’ eggs and pollution of the air with gases that are formed in the process of festering. Festering wastes are favorable places for flies to multiply, and flies are carriers of pathogens of acute intestinal diseases.
2. Burning solid domestic wastes form poisonous products, the composition of which is close to that of battle poison gases. Pungent smoke, especially in the periods of temperature inversions of the atmosphere, fills in the yards, leaving no opportunity to air our dwellings (what is called “impossible to open the fortochka ”).
3. The reaction of the body (especially of children, elderly people and people with chronic diseases) to the pollution of the air has already been discovered. It’s appearance of new diseases of respiratory system and acute condition of existing ones, diseases of cardiovascular system, various allergic conditions up to bronchial asthma.
4. Accumulation of solid domestic wastes is a favorable condition for multiplication of rodents, mostly rats. There’s mentioning of rats, “walking along the yard” in almost every complaint from the population.
We should seriously consider how dangerous these rodents are. They are carriers of such serious diseases as tick encephalitis (as rats “feed” ticks), pseudotuberculosis, iersiniosis, leptospirosis, tularemia, plague.
Thus, the unsolved problem of handling solid domestic wastes is a real danger of appearance of both infectious and not infectious diseases.
Eventually, an aesthetic picture of the city, places of recreation, forest-park zones is destroyed.
Unfortunately, our low level of culture and consciousness as to the questions of handling wastes leads to the territory being covered with litter and formation of dumps.
Dumps don’t arise out of the blue. Submitting “the law of a candy wrapper” they start growing on your “little pieces of litter” that you throw away. Possibly, knowing the cost of “this little piece of litter” someone of you will prefer to save his own health and will make several step towards a litter container instead of saving several seconds, quickly throwing away a banana peel.
It’s essential to keep in mind that cleanness depends on every person, and it starts from cleaning our own dwelling.
