Omega-3 Benefits for Kids

Omega-3 fatty acids have many health benefits. Omega-3 fats are essential fats that the body cannot produce, so they must be gotten from  food and supplements.
These fatty acids are found in fish, such as salmon, tuna, seafood and in nut oils.
Essential fatty acids such as Omega -3 are vital for proper function and development of the brain, nervous system, cardiovascular system, and vision. Omega -3 fatty acids are important for increasing the body's availability to absorb important nutrients.

In the body, omega-3s are broken down into easily absorbable units called eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Although EPA and DHA naturally occur together and work together in the body.  Studies show that each fatty acid has unique benefits.

  • DHA supports the brain, eyes, and central nervous system, which is why it is uniquely important for pregnant and lactating women.
  • EPA supports the heart, immune system, and inflammatory response.

Numerous studies have investigated the efficacy of Omega -3 fatty acids in terms of improving and maintaining health of children and infants.

Omega-3s are important not only for  children's health but essential for infants as well.

Omega-3 fatty acids have positive effects on pregnancy. Increased intake of EPA and DHA has been shown to prevent preterm labor and delivery.

Adding EPA and DHA to the diet of pregnant women has also been found to benefit visual and cognitive development in the baby, and lowers allergy risks in babies

There are many different types of research studies have linked influence of Omega -3 on children's behavior and ability to learn. The researchers of the University of Oxford have found that a child's blood levels of long-chain Omega-3 DHA can significantly predict how well he or she is able to concentrate and learn. There were investigated 500 children between seven and nine years old. Children that had higher level of Omega -3 fatty acids in their blood, DHA in particular, were associated with better reading skills and good memory, and with fewer behavior problems.

Also, studies have shown that omega-3 supplements have benefit in reducing antisocial personality disorder and ADHD symptoms (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

There had been a 16 week study performed, in Netherland, examining 80 boys ages from 8 to 14, half of them were diagnosed with ADHD. During 16 weeks children were given either margarine enriched with omega-3 fatty acids (contained 650 mg of DHA and 650 mg of EPA.), or a regular margarine.  The study concluded that the boys who had consumed omega-3 supplementation demonstrated improvement in attention,  comparison to those who did not consume the supplements.
