FOOD PRODUCTS: what is the 21st century going to feed us with?

QUALITY OF FOOD PRODUCTS
The thesis that nutrition of a person and his health are closely connected with each other needs no proofs any more. Food that we eat can influence both positively and negatively all the organs and systems of the organism. A well-balanced diet, consisting of ecologically pure products of high quality can help not just to restore our health, but also to heal the body. At the same time, contaminated products of poor quality can cause various diseases.
Now, let’s consider the quality of American and Brazilian products. The fact that “Bush’s legs” are imported to Russia in their fifty-year freshness has become commonly known. In addition to American poultry, large quantities of poultry are imported to our country from Brazil. Russian specialists have tested several large consignments of poultry from this Latin-American country. It turned out that meat of Brazilian broilers consists is 35 % of starch and water.

Then why does Russia buy poultry of poor quality? Because such products are incredibly cheap and they definitely can’t be expensive.

FROZEN FOOD PRODUCTS
We keep our food products in the refrigerator and then warm up a ready dish several times. Freezing is convenient and reliable, as it’s the best way to preserve food products in a state that is close to their natural state. But still you can’t expect anything extraordinary from your freezer compartment. Products, taken out of it, are of worse quality than fresh products. Even a hard- frozen product will spoil in course of time. Repeated thermal processing destroys most of vitamins, micro- and macroelements, essential to our organism.

DIET
One more aspect: our diet has become less diverse. The French say, “we dig a grave for ourselves with the help of our jaws…” Frankly speaking, the saying is no pleasant and makes a person embarrass, but, unfortunately if we think it over… We even don’t notice our breakfasts, lunches, dinners become a standard set of several main groups of products and ready dishes. We buy more refined, high-calorie food, poor in vitamins and mineral substances (white bread, pasta, pastry, sugar, various drinks). We regularly “enrich” our diet with products that were preserved, stored for a long period of time, intensively processed; all these processes definitely lead to considerable loss of vitamins. Most of our compatriots don’t have a typical habit of people from western countries to use daily lots of various greens, fruit and sea products.

“And if my diet is well-balanced, do I receive all necessary vitamins?”, you can ask. Unfortunately, no. Physiological needs of our organism for vitamins and microelements are formed by all the previous evolution of the species, during which metabolism of a human being adjusted itself to that quantity of biologically active substances that the person received with large quantities of simple natural food, corresponding to large power inputs of our distant ancestors.

For the last two–three decades, our civilization has made the power inputs of a man three times less. So, we must eat three times less food. Otherwise, we’ll face such problems as overeating, obesity, which lead to diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis and other diseases of the 21st century.

We should consider the fact that long-term transportation and storage (to say nothing of thermal processing and preserving), considerably reduce content of vitamins in food products.

There exists an opinion that one can cope with winter-spring avitaminosis with the help of homemade preserved fruit and vegetables. Still, specialists recommend not to abuse such products. Excess of sugar and salt and at the same time a small amount of healthy substances lead to unpleasant consequences, such as problems with blood vessels.
